IUCN Warns: Over Half of Global Mangrove Ecosystems Could Collapse by 2050 Preview: In a groundbreaking global assessment released on the International Day for Biodiversity, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has revealed that over half of the world's mangrove ecosystems are at imminent risk of collapse by 2050. The report, the first of its kind to globally evaluate an entire ecosystem group using the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems, finds that 50% of mangrove ecosystems are now classified as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered due to threats like coastal development, pollution, climate change, and deforestation. This potential collapse poses a significant risk not only to biodiversity but also to the livelihoods of millions of people who rely on mangroves for coastal protection, fisheries, and carbon sequestration. The IUCN urges immediate and sustained global action, including enhanced protection measures, large-scale restoration projects, promotion of sustainable practices, and climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, to prevent irreversible damage to these critical ecosystems.
